mom's visit (so far)

so my mom is here visiting (horray!) and we have been fairly busy already! yesterday we walked around the neighborhood and wore ourselves out, and also worked a little bit on the mobile for the baby's room. she was kind enough to bring me some crafting supplies that i needed and hadn't found here. it's not finished, but it's definitely coming along.
anyway, today she went to my doctor's appointment with me (nothing too exciting there) and then we headed for manhattan! it was mom's first time, and first time on the subway too! we bought tickets to the matinee performance of westside story, had lunch, walked and walked and walked, and then watched the show. it was really good. and it seemed to be a full house. we both especially liked the girl who played anita, it was karen olivo. she was awesome. if you haven't seen it yet, you should.
as far as i know we will be relaxing the rest of the night. i'm beat!

this is karen olivo who played anita

this is how i plan to put the ribbon on the embroidery hoop. that's probably the next step, so i'll let you know how it goes!

here is the basic concept. (sorry it's not very legible) i'm planning to do the bottom option (with the leaves)

rainy weekend

much to sophia's dismay, this was (and still is) a very rainy weekend. which meant we could do nothing except lounge around the apartment and put together the baby furniture. once again, all the pictures are of jamie, but i really did help! i put most of the dresser together by myself on friday while jamie was at work.
on sunday we took a mini road trip to long island in search of a super target. we found one - kind of. it was a really large target and it had produce, but i don't think it was a super target. (and it didn't say that on the sign) but we enjoyed driving around and seeing new places, even in the rain.
today we had our ultra sound! it went really well, and we had fun seeing the baby. we didn't find out what we are having (although we both think it's a boy) but we did have the techician write it on a card. we MIGHT decide to look, we aren't sure.
OH! and my mom comes today for a visit. we are very excited! the other good news is that the rain is supposed to stop tomorrow. cross your fingers for good weather.

the furniture is here!

today the baby's furniture arrived! we ordered it on monday, so that was pretty fast. i was so glad i was there when the ups guy came to deliver it. i'm sure you've all experienced the pain of trying to track down a package that you missed. i was actually walking sophia when he came, but i saw the ups truck and stalked it to find out where he was going. i was thrilled to find out he was headed to our house!
anyway, we ordered a crib and a dresser/changing table. they came in 2 separate boxes, and they are extremely heavy! i wanted so badly to go ahead an open them while jamie was at work, but i could get the boxes to budge! they are stuck in our hallway right now. i'm hoping (and begging) jamie to try to get them into the living room before bed tonight. cross your fingers.

here are the boxes. as you can tell, our hallway is tiny, so it was hard to even get a good picture!

this is a picture of the crib we ordered (of course we will have different bedding)

and the dresser/changing table.

i sincerely hope all the pieces are in the boxes and that nothing is broken. the crib box is kind of beat up and it rattles a bit when moved. hopefully tomorrow i will have pictures of at least one finished piece!

sophia's birthday!!!

today was little sophia's 6th birthday! can you believe it? i can't. i had planned to give her a day of fun, with a couple outings to the dog run, etc. however, i was so tired today and the weather didn't cooperate : ( since sunday it's been sunny and around 60, so i thought it would be a beautiful day. instead it was really chilly and cloudy. i had planned to buy sophie a new collar and a frisbee for her presents, but i couldn't find the frisbee she likes. so i got her a new collar and a special filling for her kong. i tried my hardest to wait for jamie to get home before i let her open her gifts, but she seemed SOOO depressed, so i gave in. she seemed really excited about them. then we went to the dog run to show off her new collar! unfortunately it was so cold we didn't stay long. all in all, i think she had a pretty good day, but of course i'm sure she would beg to differ.

here are her gifts

as soon as i put them on the floor she went crazy!

first prize: new collar

second prize: kong stuff'n

i couldn't get a good picture of this, but that's what you do with the "stuff'n" you put it inside the kong, supposedly so she will have hours of entertainment trying to get it out.

it took her about 5 seconds

mobile in the making

i've looked and looked for a mobile for the baby's room. it's been hard to find the right thing. the few i found that i liked were over $100! i think that's ridiculous. so... i've decided to make my own. i had seen a few online made with an embroidery hoop, and i saw some little felt stuffed animals as well. i thought they would be fairly easy to make. and so i began:

this was my original inspiration. i saw it on an ad for twitter, i couldn't figure out who made them, or if they sold them though.

then i saw these on etsy by a little world i thought i could kind of combine the 2 ideas.

so this is how i started. i decided on a size (6") then i sketched out shapes of the animals i wanted. i decided on 2 birds, a lion (yes, that's a lion, i'm going to do the mane separate), an elephant, and a giraffe.

i used some scraps of fabrics i already had for one side, and felt for the other.

i began with the first bird.

here's what i've got so far. i couldn't make the lion because i need orange felt, so i'll make it soon.

and the opposite side.

turned out pretty good so far. i just need to find a craft store (which isn't easy here) to buy the embroidery hoop and some more felt and yarn. i'll keep you updated!

jamie's first day

today was jamie's first day at his new job. i haven't heard from him yet, but i hope he's having a great time! he got up early and packed his bag, and even took sophia on her morning walk. he did all of this in time for me to take his first day of work picture, and head off to his train.

since he's been gone sophia and i have had a very exciting day! (that is sarcasm if you didn't recognize it.) sophia got a bath, we cleaned the house, did yoga, and went on a walk exploring our neighborhood. here are few pictures of what we saw:

this is a french restaurant that is really good. a week or so ago they closed for a remodel, but the sign said they would reopen march 15. i was very relieved because i was wanting to take my mom there for the delicious french onion soup. however, today when sophie and i walked past, they changed the date to march 25!!! darn them.

this is a very tasty looking ice cream stand that i am hoping to visit soon.

sophia's favorite spot, the dog run. this dog run is filled with gravel, not grass, so poor sophia tore up her feet last friday playing fetch. we tried to let them heal this weekend but she wouldn't stop licking them, so we were forced to bandage them up. some of you may remember this look because she has done this before:

she looks like a suicide victim doesn't she? however, the bandages didn't stay on long. hopefully her feet will heal by wednesday, because that's little sophia's birthday!

p.s. most of these pictures were found on the internet, i did not take them. unfortunately i wasn't thinking while we were walking and so i didn't take any pictures.
